In early March of this year [2006], I had the pleasure of participating in a week long Leadership Retreat hosted by PLAN Institute of Vancouver, British Columbia. I arrived in Canada a skeptic, wondering what this future planning, person network 'stuff' was all about. I left a committed believer in the philosophy of PLAN's approach, not because they converted me to their ways, but rather because they validated and strengthened all my feelings, beliefs and visions. PLAN is about relationships and I came away from Abbotsford, B.C., where the retreat was actually held, with new and incredible relationships that touched everyone I met; fellow participants, presenters, funding families, individuals whose quality of life is forever changed as a result of their personal network. I came to Abbotsford with very selfish motives, to help my son establish "a good life" for himself. I left with very unselfish motives, to help not only my son, but other families as well as professionals whose responsibilities are to help our families have better lives.
PLAN is about relationships. Since leaving Vancouver, I have maintained a connection, a relationship, with each participant in the workshop, from as far away as Australia and the U.K., to as close as the Province of Ontario, Canada. Recently, three of us have become close and through our new friendship, each has inspired the other in our personal and professional lives. I wrote to one of my new friends the following...
"What you and I and Bob are experiencing together is simply an example of what Mother Nature intended, we each draw energy and inspiration from the other, the whole is much more than the sum of the parts... just as it should be. We gain strength from the other, we become interdependent. Each of us is a strong individual, but alone and solely independent we are limited in our powers... but combined, we become interdependent, using each other's strengths for our collective growth."
I came away from the retreat energized, focused and motivated. Cory, my son, is now a Lifetime Member of Future Planning Networks of N.H., I have formally stated my beliefs (TACT Newsletter, Issue 14, page 4, "It's All About Relationships!" ) regarding Cory's services and we are currently rewriting his program to be family directed. Exciting and challenging times are ahead of us. I want to thank FPN-NH for their generosity in allowing me to participate in this life altering opportunity.
